There has been a lot of buzz surrounding the release of Cobain: Montage of Heck and for good reason: This is the general public’s first intimate look at Kurt Cobain’s life. Director Brett Morgen has gone on record stating that he had carte blanche while making the movie. He didn’t have any interference from the studio, Courtney Love or anyone else who would have had a personal biased connection with Kurt Cobain while he was alive.

Kurt’s daughter, Frances Bean Cobain, was the executive producer of the film, but she was only a year and change old when her father passed away. In the interview below, Morgen explains how the film couldn’t have been done without her support.

Morgen has also more recently shared another bit of information. Speaking to US publication Bedford + Bowery, the director has announced that a full album of Kurt’s recordings, which are featured in the movie, will be released this summer. There are 107 cassette tapes worth of recordings that feature Beatles covers, Nirvana jams and even spoken word tracks.

Don’t confuse this as a new Nirvana album however, Morgen further elaborated that the album is all Kurt:

It’s not a Nirvana album, it’s just Kurt and you’re going to hear him do things you never expected to come out of him.
